In advance of AGA’s participation in the East Africa Carbon Markets Forum in Uganda, Kenneth Muhangi — Chair of the Carbon Markets Association of Uganda (CMAU) and Partner at AGA’s Ugandan member firm, KTA Advocates - shares a personal story that illustrates the transformative potential of carbon markets in action.

We represent a number of entities that operate in the carbon market space, particularly cookstoves, bamboo agroforestry and water sanitation.

Through the sale of carbon credits, we’ve witnessed first hand how these entities have been able to significantly reduce the cost of essential products and services for communities. For example, in the case of cookstoves, the revenue from carbon credits - or partnerships with organizations that purchase those credits - has allowed them to reduce the price of cookstoves dramatically. As a result, end users now pay only a fraction of the original cost, making clean cooking more accessible for many households.

Similarly, in the water sanitation space, carbon credits have helped prioritize access to clean and safe water. These funds have enabled companies to scale their work, reaching more Ugandans with sustainable water solutions.

In another project, we’ve seen entire communities benefit by leasing their land to project developers. This arrangement provides a steady income to the community while contributing to climate-positive solutions.

These are not just abstract examples. They are real, tangible outcomes - stories of people whose lives have improved because of the opportunities created by carbon markets in Uganda. That’s the true power of this industry.

Representatives from AGA's Executive Office and those from AGA’s law and accounting member firms - including Kenneth Muhanghi from AGA law firm in Uganda, KTA Advocates and Sunday Ndamugoba and Asha- Sabrina Ayub from Rive & Co in Tanzania and Zanzibar  - will attend the East Africa Carbon Markets Forum to enhance the Alliance’s global service offering supporting sustainable and profitable operations in this important market sector. Kenneth, Sunday and Asha-Sabrina will also speak and facilitate at the plenary sessions alongside industry experts.
